Avoid the subtle but deadly trap

One of the stones that many Christians stumble over is the idea that Jesus wants us to keep a set of rules. This misperception is a subtle but deadly trap by which we are so easily snared. In this book Steve Crosby does a very articulate and biblically solid job of showing that performing to make the Lord Jesus happy is not a New Testament reality. As a Christian, we can have a living relationship with Jesus, and this changes everything. Read this book to see how the New Testament clearly spells out this profound difference, and that our relationship with Jesus provides us with the keys to release from this deadly trap of striving - and the defeat that always follows (Romans 7:15).

A must-read for every Christian.

Steve Crosby's work in this book is truly "setting the captives free" from performance based religion. He identifies the subtle tyranny of legalism and man-pleasing and how it eventually chokes out the very life from well meaning Christians, leaving them burnt out and worn out. It will challenge you to take a look at things, we as Christians, have swallowed and followed without any Biblical basis, or a skewed Biblical interpretation.

Sadly, many Christians are so afraid to question anything for fear of being "rebellious", they just swallow whatever their leaders say the Bible says, without checking it out for themselves.
So, let this book help lead you out from under mans agenda/yoke and let Jesus' yoke be easy as He said it would be.

A MUST READ ON LEGALISM

I must confess the subject of "legalism" has been an ongoing endeavor in my Christian walk for well over 20 years. I have studied Galatians extensively and preached on the book as well. I have searched for many periodical on the subject of legalism. Many of them I have found very lacking in examination of this subject, even though I believe it is at the very heart of the N.T. and an entire book (Galatians) is devoted to the subject. I purchased this book because I was curious as to what the author would have to say on the subject. I had initial fears that it would be a shallow examination of the subject or that the author would go off on a tangent on the subject. My fears were subsided as I read and read and read. The book is such an insightful and accurate examination of the subject that I truly would consider this book a MUST for any child of God who desires to walk in a relationship context with Jesus Christ and desires to have the REAL life of the Christian walk. I have endeavored to read this book again because there is so much solid biblical detail and illustrations. If you want to walk in freedom and know Christ (Php 3), then I strongly encourage you to read this book! The only thing that bothers me is that there isn't a separate book on Galatians! Dr. Crosby has been a real blessing to me.

Great teaching with exercises included

Christianity is unique among religions in that it offers a personal relationship with God, the Creator of the universe. We can actually communicate and interact with God.

But saying communication is possible and experiencing it are two very different things. The Virklers have written this book as an interactive journey in hearing God. They share some principles and then give readers opportunity to practice hearing from God through journaling.

They begin with general principles of hearing from God, giving four foundational building block in communicating with God. The next section is on meditation on His Word, giving foundational principles and then a seven step process. The last section is on hearing God through dreams, why they are important and then the process of recording and interpreting them.

The book is set up so readers can read a short chapter a day and then record their responses in the generous space given. Here is a sample question to stimulate writing: “Write down what you envision a lifestyle of abiding in Christ looks like in your life.” (74)

One of the keys to hearing God that was a challenge was, “Become still so you can sense God's flow of thoughts.” The exercise on waiting was difficult but enlightening. I really appreciated the suggestion to use a quiet worship song. Some good ideas were given, with exercises, to overcome distractions too.

This is a good book for any Christian desiring to hear and recognize God's voice. The technique of giving a short teaching and then an actual exercise really worked well. And the authors included some very encouraging testimonies of people who have successfully heard from God and acted on it. This book is written from a charismatic perspective and includes a short section at the end on hearing God for healing.

This book stands as a perfect reminder of how God works in the lives of believers. I have committed to praying for discernment in sharing the gospel message with someone on 3/16 through a project of Christian Library International, John 3/16 Day. I am overdue in reading this book, Hearing God, yet in His perfect timing I picked up this book and found it to be perfect in addressing my need to hear from God. I love how it is set up as a listening journal.

I am in the midst of journaling through the whole book. It is both delightful and challenging. Maybe sometimes we talk more to God than listen because we think He might expect something of us that we will be reluctant to do? I am asking who does He want me to approach with His Good News. As the book suggests, I wait expectantly to hear His answer, probably not the easy answer I would come up with on my own. But His way is always best and fruitful for His purposes.

If you need specific answers from God, this book is a helper tool sent by God. I receive heart impressions from God rather than spoken words from Him. Sometimes the Holy Spirit brings recall of God's written word as His answer. Maybe you just want to draw closer to God. This is the book for that, too. This is a book that will help you get on board with God if you are waiting at the station and for those on board, it will take you deeper into the heart and love God has for you.

Great little book to use as a devotional or to just encourage you each day. This book can be taken along anywhere you go and you will be able to just read a page or two while waiting. It is small enough to fit in yours purse or pocket. It is little gems that will encourage you and give you wisdom on how to live each day and stay healthy. Would make a nice gift at Christmas or birthdays. Recommend to all Christians for yourself and also gifts.

Great reference book for any engineer

I bought this book because I am nuts about cars, but in addition to that, I am also a professional in a technical field. I used this book as a reference during the writing of my doctoral thesis. I found that the Bosch Automotive Handbook had a very comprehensive section on hardness testing, which I used extensively in my research at that time. I am also using this book in calculating the suspension geometry for a car project at home - I use it at work so much that I'm considering the purchase of a second copy for home use.

The book is full of topics that are useful to anyone with a technical background who is interested in the general construction of complex things with moving parts. There is a section devoted to the "tightening of threaded fasteners", where all of the specifications of fasters are described and the forces that are involved are written out. There are fairly detailed sections on welding and other joining methods. There are sections on wheel offset, tire construction, NVH measurements (noise, vibration, and harshness), wear testing, fuel efficiency, coatings of surfaces, vehicle dynamics, the balance of forces in a piston engine, and fuel injection. There are a great couple of pages on "empirical values and data for calculation" which compares parameters between engine types, such as Diesel, gas, Stirling, and rotary engines. There are many pages dedicated to the calculation of engine parameters such as displacement, compression ratio, final compression temperature, piston acceleration, fuel supply, and piston pressure. I have actually used some of these once or twice and I love the fact that I have them on hand, even if I don't really need them.

Ever wonder what the difference between a screw-type and Roots-type supercharger is? It's in this book. Ever wonder how a wastegate works? It's right here. Fuel injector design, spark plug gaps... all of it is in here.

The best thing about the book is that even if it does not offer a lot of detail on a particular topic, there is at least a paragraph devoted to the subject with enough information and context so that the reader is armed with the tools to search for more meaningful literature on the topic.

One gripe: at least in this edition, I don't see anything useful on controller area networks (CAN) or how one goes about programming them or controlling them. CAN is becoming an essential part of automotive manufacturing and I would expect that someday Bosch will cover this topic more thoroughly.

With that said, I consider this book to be one of the "must haves" for technical reference books. With a recent edition of the CRC Handbook of Chemistry and Physics, Perry's Chemical Engineer's Handbook, Mark's Standard Handbook for Mechanical Engineers, Machinery's Handbook, Metals Handbook, and the Bosch Automotive Handbook, one person has an excellent overview of the entire Industrial Revolution. I call this library of books the "Build-Your-Own-Civilization Library". If you like handbooks (I cherish them), get this one, then go buy the others.

Excellent Overview for Gearheads

This book is an excellent overview of all aspects of vehicle design theory, basic principles, and reference information. It is NOT a guide to auto repair and is NOT for someone who is only interested in fixing and/or improving auto performance. The best description is to say it is the one single most useful book a newly graduated engineer should have and read upon entering the field of vehicle engineering and engine design. This is not to say it is beyond non-engineers, but only to say that if you are not interested in the theory and principles of automotive design and operation, this book is not for you.

Good Automotive Mechanical Engineering Reference

This book is not for someone looking to learn about automotive mechanics or how to fix and repair cars. This book contains a fair amount of formulas and tables that are useful to those who work in the area of automotive design. It does describe briefly all aspects of the automoble such has how an ignition, starter, steering, fuel management, braking system, etc. work but not to the point that it would be useful for someone trying to troubleshoot automotive problems. If you're looking for your first automotive textbook to learn about the systems on your car then this book is not it. If you're looking for an indepth HANDBOOK for a quick reference for any automotive aspect (that you once knew but now forgotten) then it's worth every penny. The book fits in the palm of your hand and is 1-inch thick. Like a bible in many respects.

Great book

Years ago, when I first started teaching, I used a fabulous series of worksheets that came from the Frank Schaffer books. This is the same company. They used a style of asking simple questions about simple stories. It was an excellent way to get children to WRITE the answers to story questions. Back in 1972, the format of the short story followed by 5 basic questions was exactly what my students needed. It is still priceless. The short stories are excellent. I bought level 1 and level 2 also. Now that I am retired, I use the books to tutor children who need help with comprehension. You can always ask more in depth questions and opinion questions using the short stories. A teacher needs shorter stories when teaching beginning comprehension. these are perfect.

Great help!

This book is smaller than 8x11 so I was surprised about that, but it works great. Most comprehension books are multiple choice which any student can just bubble in an answer, but this one has comprehension questions that students have to answer. Overall, this book is helpful and the kids enjoy the stories.

About the Author
Bill Johnson is a fifth-generation pastor with a rich heritage in the Holy Spirit. Together Bill and his wife serve a growing number of churches that have partnered for revival. The book Supernatural Power of a Transformed Mind is life changing. Put it together with the DVDs and a Study Guide and you have curriculum you can share and help others. There are two DVD's with 4 20-minute lessons on each DVD. You can listen to one session at a time or Play All. The Study Guide is a reinforcement of the book. It's all awesome!

Love the book and the videos. Like the study guide. Don't like the Leaders Guide - too basic - too regimented - following the Leaders Guide would make for a boring, impersonal class.

By far the best curriculum I have ever watched and read. This curriculum teaches you how to renew your mind to the supernatural things of God and walk in a life full of miracles. Bill Johnson does a phenomenal job teaching on the renewed mind and what it looks like. The revelation in this curriculum is absolutely priceless and will challenge you to tap into the power of the Holy Spirit that is inside of you. I have read the book more than once and have watched the DVDs more than once. Can't get enough of this teaching!

Joel A. Freeman, Ph.D. has served as chaplain for the NBA Washington Bullets/Wizards since 1979. As president of the Freeman Institute consulting firm, Dr. Freeman conducts team building/leadership/cultural diversity initiatives for churches, corporations, U.S. government agencies, and the leaders of other nations. Joel and his wife and family live in Maryland.

Don B. Griffin holds a Bachelor of Arts degree in history from Lafayette College. A Bible teacher and preacher, Don conducts biblically based seminars of practical Christian living as well as pulpit ministry. He is also the top human resource executive for a $350 million corporation in the metro New York area. Don lives in Pennsylvania with his wife and son.

Excellent book!

I read the same book as the previous reviewer from Egypt. While I respect the right to express one's opinion in this forum provided by Amazon, I had a very different response to the book. I generally start reading a book from the rear and this is how I started with Return To Glory. The detailed notes and bibliography impressed me -- about 15 pages. The amount of documentation and type of research immediately showed me that Freeman and Griffin were on a thoughtful, reasoned mission for the truth, regardless of what was uncovered.
I consider myself to be a student of Egyptology. The writers of Return to Glory are anything but racist. I am glad this book exists, because it will force the curious reader to sift through what he or she has been taught for years. I know that it has caused me to rethink what I have studied and learned over the years. It is my studied opinion that the co-authors of Return to Glory stay well within the boundary lines of sound scholarship. I respect that.
Over the years I have visited the Cairo Museum, the British Museum, the Louvre, the Oriental Institute, the Vatican Museum and many other sites. I have gazed upon the faces of many statues depicting pharaohs and other inhabitants of the Dynasties of Egypt. Many have clear Afroid features, including the Sphinx of Giza.
In America, "one drop of Black blood" defines that person as Black, while some anthropologists and archaeologists seem to reverse that standard in their attempt to define the race of the ancient Egyptians -- "one drop of Caucasian blood" defines that person as White. Using this Euro centric standard, one cannot help but wonder if any one of the pharaohs would have been permitted to sit in the front of a bus in Montgomery, Alabama in the 1940s.
It is my opinion that nothing in Return to Glory should be taken to imply that the authors think that folks of other people groups should not reflect upon their own heritage or share it with others -- an impression some White people get when people of color want to affirm a distinctive heritage. When Black people claim a desire to express their own heritage, they are not denying anyone else the right to theirs.
Focusing on an aspect of history that concerns one's own heritage is not the same thing as repressing other views or insights, as some extreme advocates of "political correctness" have been known to do. Thus, it is not fair for some readers to dismiss a Black person's perspective out of hand by simply associating it with a political or social camp, or by labeling it as "racist".
By the way, I highly recommend a book that will cause people to respond like the previous reader from Egypt. This book will make you rethink everything you have been taught about human history.

Awesome!

This book will come as a blessing to all who want to see restoration of dignity to the black race. I am not at all suprised at the negative comments toward the book. White supremacy is being threatened! A reply to the comment denying the cover-up: I went to find info online about ancient Egypt and guess what the illustrations on these "educational" web-sites were? They were people with Middle Eastern and European features and definitely not negro features. I personally am very excited about the possibility of undoing the damage perpetrated by all the lies. By the way, I am white, and the Bible tells us to do justice and relieve the oppressed. I will do my part by getting as many of these books (and DVD's) as I can afford to and distribute them, out of love for my black brothers and sisters.

Hold Your Head Up High: The Truth Is Coming

This is an excellent book in my opinion and the facts it lists are well documented, but not easy to find unless you are willing to search intensely for them. After reading this book, many things were obvious to me and that is that many white people and white indoctrinated black people would have issues with facts. One of the many issues, I knew these groups would have is how Egyptians are portrayed. One mentioned that it is obvious that Egyptian are Black; Well if this is the case, why does the U.S.A. government list and require all North Africans and the so called Middle Eastern people to declare themselves as being WHITE no matter how BLACK they are before they are allowed to move to this country or before they work in this country. If you do not believe this, look and any government or Fortune 500 company job application. The book explains they reasons in detail. All Blacks and Whites can keep there heads buried in the sand, however, this book attempts to lift you up, stops the hate/self hate and explains the truth of why you feel as your do. The book is not perfect, but it is excellent.

Outstanding Book -- Redisvovering the Kingdom, M. Munroe

I had been praying that the Holy Spirit would expand my understanding of the Bible and the saving-grace message. Through three distinct instances, I was led to this book.

The author writes clearly and directly so that one can follow the Bible and learn from Dr. Munroe's knowledge of the Kingdom to come.

We often give only the first part in our delivery of the soul saving message of the Word of God to others. This book will be a great aid in expanding one's understanding of the Bible, so that the whole message of the Kingdom of God can be included.

excellant teaching and inspiring

this book lived up to my expectations. and beyond. the material was easy to understand and the intent plainly stated. a help in Christian growth. the Author shared his own experiences and truth based. no exagerations but inspiring and with the ability to cause provacative thought in the reader. thourouly attention keeping as a study book and for personal enjoyment. thank you. Dr. Munroe is a captivating teacher whose teaching 'remains' after the book has been read. makes me sure to read it again. sincerely, Betty Matthews Texas

Excellent reading!

Hubby bribed me into reading this book by promising to rub my back every night until I finished it. Well, I started reading it and found the intro and 1st chapter BORING. Hubby advised me to skip to Chapter 2. I did and was hooked!

I went back to chapter 1 and am now 1/2 way through the book. Hubby is on his second reading already.

This book is life changing. You will never again view your relationship with God the same. Every Christian should read it as the truths in this book will strengthen you, give you new vision and direction.

Unfortunately, the church of Christ has spent too much time focusing on aspects of the Kingdom of God instead of the Kingdom as a whole. Once you understand the concept of the Kingdom, you have the keys to unlock success in every area of your life.
