Bluestein out of touch with "real world" classrooms

I just began my 8th year of teaching in a public high school. I have been nominated for our local teacher of the year and I have received other recognitions that speak to my professional dedication. When I first started reading this book I was excited; what I read was promising. Bluestein's description of what a classroom could be echoed my own desires as an educator. However, as I continue through the book I find the excitement being replaced with increasing frustration with each successive turn of the page. Yet again, here is someone telling teachers that we, ourselves, bear much of the responsibility for the ills plaguing education and that in order to "fix" these self-created problems, we must change our fundamental teaching practices. Basically, we're doing it wrong--again! Of course, Bluestein offers suggestions on how to remedy our plight. And what she suggests could be wonderful, indeed--in an ideal world. The problem is that I doubt she's been responsible for a classroom of teenagers lately--especially a classroom under the pressures of NCLB! Even despite some reservations, I tried some of her suggestions with a class of juniors representing the BEST of what our school has to offer. If this did not work with THESE kids, I have very serious doubts about how viable the suggestions might be with a different student population. I don't know what kind of kids she experienced success with using the methods she espouses (if, in fact, she did), but they weren't from my world. And neither is she. So, principals and vice-principals can say what they will. I know they mean well and they usually have our best interests at heart; however, most of them are not dealing with 25+ kids in a classroom setting every class period. This book may sound promising, but more pages of idealistic and impractical rhetoric do nothing to bring substantial improvement within our reach.

As a Alternative School Principal I find this work invaluable for inservicing our staff.
I have High Schoolers, Middle Schoolers and Elementary students in a separate location.
Discipline has changed as have the students and this conceptually fits the students.
Excellent work for secondary school discipline.
Being a Wm. Glasser, M. D. desciple it fits well with what I feel needs to be done with kids today.
