Great
By P. Verbeck
I really loved reading this book. It's full of historical accounts, documenting amazing supernational events surrounding real people, living real lives. I grew up in the church and was familiar with many names, but had no real understanding of who these people were or the context of thier lives. I was surprised at how quickly I read from cover to cover, bearly putting it down. I loved it and have given it as gifts since. Thanks to the author for a great work!!

Please, be like the Bereans instead of just believing anything

I write this review with a heavy heart. Know that I'm trying to be careful here - and that my review isn't because I have a different theology or point of view from the author. Coming from the streams John Crowder I do understand his thinking. Unfortunately this book is not only wrong but almost intentionally misleading. Let me just state a few points and try to avoid contentious theological bickering.

John starts out by building his case on two non-canonical books: the Book of Enoch and the Epistle of Barnabas. In fact most of the theological statements throughout are built on such shaky if not heretical foundations. Many (most perhaps) of the people John quotes and builds his assertions on have either fallen or are of a dubious nature, e.g. Todd Bentley, John Dowie, Thomas Mertin. Building theological beliefs on anecdotal stories, especially mystical ones, is dangerous. Cherry picking scriptures instead of serious expository and solid hermeneutics is what leads people into error - and cults.

John defends one of the first heretical movements - Montanism, as the forerunner of the Pentecostal movement. While lavishing praise on this "persecuted movement" John fails to mention that its founder, Montanus, claimed to be the incarnation of the Holy Spirit as well as other horrible abuses. Montanus believed the Old Testament should be eliminated, laid the foundation for antisemitism, took guidance from angels (shades of Todd Bentley), and elevated his own writings to canonical status.

On page 145 John claims the Muslim world has not been evangelized because of Christian racism. He says that the failure of the world to be evangelized is because of our apathy - in blatant contradiction to the word that says the world did and will always reject the light. Only those the Father calls will respond to the gospel. Later John asserts that divorce is largely the result of the reformation's rebellious nature. These are ignorant and insulting statements - none of which are based on the word.

On page 155 John says "I am convinced that, IF there is suffering in the world, it is ONLY because the church is not walking in her rightful authority to destroy the works of the devil..." Emphasis added. Really? The apostles who were martyred, the blood of the saints throughout the ages, and all of the suffering in the world is because we did not exercise authority? Seriously? This is beyond error. If it weren't so hurtful and wrong minded it would be funny.

I could go on endlessly. The Theban Legion for example is a historical myth based on a polemic letter from a church Bishop 200 years after the supposed event. Legions prior to Constantine had few Christians let alone 100% believers. No recorded legion ever had 6600 men - nor were ever decimated (punished by killing in groups of a tenth) to oblivion. It makes a good story however - not good enough to build belief upon however. Almost all of the author's ideas and theological assertions are build on that kind of sand and not the Word.

This book glorifies levitation, burning ones fingers off, glowing, gold dust and all kinds of things that are simply foolish at best. They fall more in the occult than the works of Jesus or the Holy Spirit. Where is character transformation? Where is the feeding, care and love of Christ? Are we to admire the desert mystics (like those who sat on poles and believed maggots feasting on their flesh glorified God) instead of believers who sacrificially work and perish serving others?

At one point John says "the problem is, there can be 99% truth and 1% poison, which defiles the whole thing." I think that is one of the few truths in this awful book. There is far less than 99% truth here and the poison so toxic that this book should never have been published.

I sincerely am sorry for writing this. I ask before you flame this review that you take the bible in one hand and this book in the other and then compare the two. In the past few years we've had many and major ministries fail. Many are because they have built on a gospel other than the cross as Paul warned. Build on this material and you'll follow Rick Joyner and Todd Bentley's path.

Awesome book by an awesome believer!

I just spent the last 3 nights in GLORY HARVEST meetings with John Crowder and his wife, Lili. What awesome and sweet spirited couple who travel with their 4 young children.

Crazy man? No. Sold out radical? YES!!! Beware, though. If you have a religious spirit you will more than likely be offended by this book. He knows his church history, though, and most of the incidents he has documented will astonish you!

I can't wait for he and Lily to come back to Branson, MO again!
I highly recommend this book! You won't be able to put it down!
