This is an excellent book for all of us Christians to read. There are three reasons, as follows: 1. We must know and always believe that God answers all prayer. 2. The words of this author, and His Words, those of the Lord, in this excellent book are encouragers and confidence-builders while they teach us what we must bleieve, and all is based on the Word of God, and 3. Don Nori Sr. is the successful publisher and the Father of Destiny Image the Spirit-filled publishers of books world-wide with writings for all who want to grow spiritually. This book provides a wealth of Godly advice and leaderhip for the person who prays and that should be all of us. It is an 'easy read', and I just love the writings of Don Nori Sr. Am I biased yes, but with a knowledge of his many writings. You just must read this book and grow in His Power. Wow!

How Do You Know He's Real? is a collection of celebrity essays about God acting in their lives. The contributors include athletes, musicians, and actors. Their stories often follow a familiar pattern of fame leading to drugs and alcohol before hitting bottom and being turned around by an encounter with God. That's not to say the accounts are all stock and cliched, but rather that God meets each person in their need--and for celebrities that need will be similar. And many of the tales include growing up in stable Christian homes, but still needing to make personal decisions about God and Christ and how that decision impacted their careers.

The stories are collected alphabetically but Hagberg has provided a topic finder so a reader battling discouragement or frustration can find offerings from Billy Ray Cyrus, Nancy Stafford, Zorro, Gary Burghoff or John Schneider.

Each essay begins with a picture and short biography of the contributor, listing their accomplishments. Following the selection is God's Road Map, a few sentences about the issues raised by the author, with Bible verses for teaching and encouragement.

The essays themselves are as varied as the contributors. Some of them read as if they were written to be given as speeches. The author has collected very readable stories telling how celebrities have become Christians, and they share their low points and their joys here. This is a welcome peek into the lives of well known people who typically are more secretive.

Ricky Skaggs, Kirk Cameron, Gloria Gaynor, Bethel Johnson (34 people in all) tell about their struggles and their early days as new Christians.

Billy Ray Cyrus tells of singing in his grandpa's Pentecostal church when he was 4, and includes the touching lyrics to the song he wrote "The other side."

Jackie (Jacklyn) Zeman, star of General Hospital, advises that when you are at a crossroads "cry out to God and ask for His guidance."

Al Kasha's story resonated with me; this Academy Award winning songwriter overcame agoraphobia, and talks about how Hollywood is a tough place for a Jew who came to Christ, and how he started a Hollywood Bible study group.

Just couldn't get enough of this book!

I first ordered this book for my son-in-law, because he is such a Charlie Daniels fan. I then ordered a copy for a friend of mine who is going through a rough time in her life right now. Before giving it away, I flipped through the pages, and read the story by Jonny Lang. I am a 61 yr. old grandmother, but I have albums by him. I was just blown away, and had to order a copy for myself.

PASSIONATE PURSUIT

In this book Tommy will light the fire in you to truly have a heart that hungers for more of God. I, in no way, feel that he is derogatory about the Scriptures. This is a man that hungers for more of God and will not settle for "religion." He wants a relationship with the living God and fears not what man says. Tommy loves the Lord and wants us each to experience that same love relationship with the Lord of Lords and King of Kings. Jesus is what he hungers for and what he wants us to hunger for as well. More of Jesus NOT more of man's schedules and rigidity in our worship services. For the person that said he could not read past the first chapter, I suggest that you try again. maybe the enemy of your soul got you to put it down so that you could not experience the liberating love of Jesus. As far as Tommy calling the Word of God "old love letters" that IS exactly what Scripture is, God declaring His love for humanity. Tommy did not do anything wrong here, I say GO FOR IT Tommy!
If we begin to read a book with the thought in our mind that we will find something that offends us, then the enemy of our soul WILL find a way to offend so that we cannot get what God has anointed his servants to deliver.

Be Inspired and Challenged!

Hearing the words spoken by the man himself. The man who firsthand experienced those things at which he wrote about is beautiful. You can literally feel his heart and compassion for seeking the face of God and knowing the heart of God come across in his voice. The words he speaks are inspiring, uplifting yet convictional and needed! Why be buttered up with fluff. This series gets right to the heart of the matter. With additional monolouge that you won't find in the book and the other audio series and also the music that accompanies this tape is wonderful and well placed. This series is worth the money for sure. If have the book, this will make an excellent supplement to your collection. Feel the fire, feel the passion, become a God Chaser!

Hit the nail right on the head...

The churches are full, but of what are they full? As a very open-minded Christian, I share the feelings the author has concerning today's religious country clubs we call Churches. I don't think that the author of this book was trying to put down Scriptures as some supposed, but there is much to God and of God than what He has done in the past. God wants us to enjoy His awesome presence and not just get a few goose bumps on Sunday mornings and leave the same way we went to Church. We are supposed to seek God's face and not His blessing (2 Chronicles 7:14). Generally speaking, I think that for years we, Christians, have shown the world how loud we can get, how big our buildings are, how holy we are, and yet, there is no bread in the House of Bread. Again, you CAN'T judge a book by reading one chapter, there's no wisdom on that, but this book and any other book that references the Bible MUST be evaluated in the light of the written Word of God and determine is the whole book is out of order with God's will or if there is some meat that is edible. Paul says, "Prove all things; hold fast that which is good." I believe in revelations from God, but they must be in accord with Scripture. Generally speaking, I am so amazed at the arrogance we Christians have when we are confronted with a different point of view of God. If what someone says does not conform to what our doctrine, not Scriptures, teaches, we discard it so easily. While others might think the author is putting down Scripture, at the same time, they are elevating their doctrine/belief above Scripture. I think this book is fabulous and has answered so many questions I had had in the past concerning God. No, this book is not above the Bible, but it is worth the reading. Be a God Chaser not a blessings chaser. Chase the Giver, not the gifts. Be open to the Great Teacher, the Holy Spirit of God. If He says throw away the book, do it. Only HE can lead you to ALL truth. May God bless all who are seeking His face!!!

Great for test prep. year round...

I really enjoy using this book. It practices skills in a pattern, so they are constantly revisited throughout the year. I also like that it covers things that maybe you can't do a unit on before the state (NY) exam. Most of the format is easy to use...on a very rare occasion, some of the questions are worded or drawn a little oddly...but overall it's a great tool.

I use this book for my high school Special Education students in Math (prealgebra). They daily problems work as a great starter/opener for math class to get them going. The quizzes are great for a weekly assessment of their basic math skills.

Excellent practice!

I've been using Math4Today for 6 years at the 3rd grade level and it has helped my students increase their math scores and skills. Because this book constantly goes back and reviews all the 3rd grade standards, my students don't forget the skills we've learned at the beginning of the year. For example, we start the year with place value and then our math program moves on from there. By using Math4Today daily, my kids are constantly exposed to place value, expanded form, graphs, addition, subtraction, etc. which helps them retain what they learned. It starts out pretty easy, but gets more challenging as the year progresses. This book is one that I will never get rid of and will use as long as I teach. I've used the 2-3, but want to get the 3-4 one as well. I highly recommend this book.

Steve Rushin on New York Irish Bars

I met my wife in an Irish bar in New York: The Dublin House, on West 79th Street, with its great neon harp flashing above the door like a lighthouse beacon. We met before the smoking ban, when cigarettes were still compulsory and everyone left the place smelling like a smoked brisket and the harp sometimes seemed, as you walked out alone at 2 o'clock in the morning, to be blinking back tears.

At the time, I frequented another bar on the West Side--though "frequented" hardly does it justice. "Constanted" is more like it. The Emerald Inn, on Columbus Avenue, was a block from my fetid apartment and became, as it did for many in the neighborhood, the rec room or front parlor I didn't have.

There were other bars: You didn't want to be seen at the same place every night--a problem not shared by the protagonist in The Pint Man, Rodney Poole. Rodney is content to take up residence at Boyle's, the New York bar where much of the action (and conspicuous inaction) of The Pint Man takes place.

But I sometimes cheated on the Emerald, and went uptown to McAleer's, which had darts, or across town to Fiona's, for European Champions League soccer. There, my English buddy Simon and I would sit in hard-back chairs watching mid-week, mid-day matches that bled into prime time, and then into the 11 o'clock news, and then into the late night monologues. One night we chased a day of beer and TV with a bracing walk through Central Park, at midnight, in a downpour. When we reached the western shore of the park, we went to the nearest place we could find to get out of the rain: The Emerald, for a nightcap.

All of this is to say that I always wanted to own a convivial place that could shelter you from a storm, and reality, that was small, but with the sort of ancient, oversized, walk-in urinals they have at the Old Town Bar or McSorley's. (One of the minor ambitions of this novel was to do for urinal makers what Moby Dick did for whaling, and exalt an overlooked industry.)

In writing The Pint Man, I was faced with the elemental question of what to call my bar. Beer has long been in my blood, and not just in the literal sense. My ancestors were much practiced at naming bars. In 1946, my father's father, Jack Rushin, opened a joint on Market Street in San Francisco he called Jack's. But the neon sign he ordered came back misspelled. Faced with a costly correction, he installed it unaltered, which is why San Francisco had--under different ownership--a famous nightclub of the '50s called Fack's.

On my mother's side, I come from a long line of big-league baseball players, firefighters, and bar owners named Boyle. My grandfather Jimmie Boyle briefly played catcher for the New York Giants and his brother Buzz was an outfielder for the Brooklyn Dodgers. Their uncle, Jack Boyle, had a long career with the Phillies, then became nearly as renowned as the owner of a bar in downtown Cincinnati.

With The Pint Man then, I aspired to tell a story largely set in an Irish bar, with a lot of beer, and a little bit of baseball talk, and more urinals than were strictly necessary, and to call that bar Boyle's. Like its real-world antecedents, Boyle's is proof that sunlight isn't always required for life to flourish on this planet. --Steve Rushin

The first novel from former Sports Illustrated columnist Rushin joins other works of pub fiction, yet it's the wordplay—not the alcohol consumption—that drives the novel. Rodney Poole is unemployed, spends much of his time at New York bar Boyle's, and has had only one serious girlfriend. Change is in the air as Rodney's best friend prepares to move to Chicago and Rodney meets a woman named Mairead (who appears to actually like him); even his prospects of finding a job are looking up. It's not a plot-heavy novel, with much of its suspense revolving around a mysteriously disappearing and reappearing U-Haul truck and the question of whether two bullies schooled by Rodney will show up at Boyle's again. What sets the work apart is Rodney's sharp wit. Praised for is verbal ambidexterity, Rodney loves wordplay as much as he loves beer, as is amply demonstrated in his wooing of Mairead. The banter is funny enough to make the reader look past the novel's defects, and Rushin emerges as one of the sharpest wits on the scene. (Feb.)

It concerns unemployed 34-year-old Rodney Poole, a regular at Boyle’s Irish Pub in New York City, who wonders whether he is a descendant of the fabled pintmen of Dublin or merely a run-of-the-mill drunk. Over the course of the book, he sees one friend off to marriage, loses another to death, and falls in love with the career-oriented Mairead—who, naturally, sees potential in Rodney that he is blind to. But while the basic premise of the book is nothing new—it’s a coming-of-age tale, even if it starts at a later age than usual—it’s Rushin’s narrative voice, guileless, digressive, and ribald, riddled with wordplay and trivia, that makes this such a pleasure. Some readers may grow impatient, as Pint Man doesn’t travel very far and it takes its sweet time getting there, but it’s great company for an evening, with or without a pint at your elbow. --Keir Graff

"The Pint Man": This Glass is Much More Than Half Full

I've been a big Steve Rushin fan for 20 years, dating back to his early years as one of Sports Illustrated's most gifted story-tellers. "The Pint Man" was my first experience reading Rushin as a novelist and I was not disappointed. He creates, more than ever, like a kid in a sandbox, with each pebble a letter and no limitations about what may be lurking behind the next pebble.

For laugh-out-loud humor, plot twists, engaging pop culture references, periodic etymological lessons, trivia fodder, and just plain-old mind-blowing wordplay, "The Pint Man" is a bulls-eye.

While, yes, it is a novel, it also serves as an encyclopedia, history lesson, trivia treasure trove, and insightful commentary on a wide range of fronts. And of the many masterfully told scenes here, perhaps my favorite parts involves a guy, and an act, by the name of "Hookslide."

A Wordy Romp of a Novel

Rodney, a thirty-something year old man who has not yet fully grown up, is in a bit of a holding pattern at the moment. Six weeks ago, he lost his job in 'corporate communications' for Talbott's when he wrote a speech for the CEO of the company and missed what proved to be a very embarrassing typo, and his search for a new job can hardly be called serious. On the personal side, his best friend Keith is moving to Chicago to get married and start a new job. But happily, there is still one constant in his life, his favorite neighborhood bar, Boyle's.

"Rodney has read a book called The Great Good Place, by an urban sociologist named Ray Oldenburg, who coined the phrase "the third place" to describe informal public gathering spaces-bars- that are neither home nor job. Rodney had no work and home was a way station, where he kept his books and his bed. For him, bars were his first. Home was the second. There was no third."

Yes, Boyle's plays a very important role in his life and in this book, but it is not the only thing. He has all those books...

"He kept every book he has ever read. Until there were just too many, he had them all on shelves, their spines displayed as trophies, like the taxidermied heads of big game he had bagged."

And now he has met a smart, beautiful woman, Mairead, "rhymes with parade", who shared his love of wordy banter...oh yes, it may be love!

On the surface, this book is a glimpse into Rodney's life and the love triangle he is caught in, between his bar and this delightful woman he has just met. While that is a fine story, with some very amusing incidents, the real attraction for this reader is Rodney's love of words...palindromes and witty banter, puns and spoonerisms, and endless examples of amusing trivia.

"Some people have a mind like a steel trap. Rodney had a mind like a lint trap. It retained only useless fluff: batting averages, ancient jingles, a slogan glimpsed once, years ago, on the side of a panel van, for an exterminator ("We'll Make Your Ants Say Uncle") or a window treatment specialist ("A Couple of Blind Guys") or a septic tank specialist ("Doody Calls")."

A man who love crossword puzzles and puns, who actually reads books and, most of all, could write an essay on what makes a good pint of Guinness...he may just be the perfect man...lol

While this is Rushin's first novel, he is a very experienced writer. After graduating from college in 1988, he joined the staff of Sports Illustrated, where he was a senior writer until 2007. He has written three previous non-fiction books, including The Caddie Was a Reindeer, which was a semifinalist in 2004 for the Thurber Prize for American Humor. I suspect there is a bit of an autobiographical element to this book, at least in his love of Guinness and banter. I find Mr. Rushin a very amusing writer and I thoroughly enjoyed this wordy romp of a novel.

Clever, witty and hilarious

Steve Rushin has a magical way of weaving words into a story that combines wit with story-telling and humor with philosophy. A year's stay at a beer-can shaped dormitory (McCormick Hall) just across from the 'Lanche can have a profound effect on one's vision. The Pint Man is very entertaining and hilarious, but after the laughs are done you realize the story has a deeper meaning. The Pint Man is about the friendships and relationships that shape our lives and the spiritual manifestations that bind us together.

This book is for the 'Mature' Christian that is willing to step out of his(her)comfort zone. The revelation's that Bruce Allen shares in this book are;"Think-outside-the-box" Christianity. This book is full of life changing attitudes of the Spirit filled life. Promise of the third day is truly a remarkable step forward in these end times. You will not be disappointed. Fasten your chariot of fire-belt and be transformed by the Word of God. WOW!!!!

Do we live in the end-time-day that ancient prophets saw in visions and dreams? Dr. Bruce D. Allen says, "Yes." In his book, Promise of the Third Day, he illuminates many spiritual truths that have evaded Believers in their struggle to comprehend the times and the seasons we are in.

"The Lord taught me a long time ago that what He chooses to release through us must first be formed in us. The truth about the Third Day must be received by faith and by the revelation of the Holy Spirit. Once the revelation is formed in us we will begin to walk in these promises, and the Lord will be glorified through us." - Bruce Allen, Promise of the Third Day, page 24

The third day

According to Scripture Yeshua prophesied that He would raise up the destroyed Temple on the third day (John 2:19). The Bible clearly reveals that the human body is the Temple where the Holy Spirit dwells (1 Corinthians 3:16). Therefore this prophecy was fulfilled in one respect when Yeshua's crucified body was resurrected in the morning of the third day after His death.

However, there is another application of this prophesy that has not yet been fulfilled. Prophetically 1,000 years is equivalent to one day with God (2 Peter 3:8). And on the third prophetic day, or 3,000 years, God will raise up the metaphoric body of Christ, which is the Believers collectively.

Obtaining the promise

This is an excellant book that prepares us for the days ahead. God created each one of us with a destiny. It is a day of wholly turning to the Lord, leaning, and trusting in Him. This book points the way. I highly recommend it.
